Implementing eWater Systems to enhance workplace sustainability targets.

Download Story

Arup is the creative force at the heart of many of the world’s most prominent projects in the built environment. Putting sustainability at the heart of its work is one of the ways in which Arup exerts a positive influence on the wider world. It is one of the core foundations of its mission to ‘shape a better world’.

In September 2018, Arup moved into their new Melbourne workplace at One Melbourne Quarter. Setting a high benchmark for green credentials, the design responds to the firm’s regional workplace guidelines co-developed with HASSELL.

With sustainable design at its core, the workplace is on track to receive the first WELL Gold Certification under the New & Existing Interiors tool in Melbourne, and is on target to achieve a 6 Star Green Star interiors rating representing world leading design.

Installing eWater Systems

As part of their fit out an eWater Hygiene System was installed for use within the office. This system now acts as a sustainable generator of cleaning and sanitising solution for use throughout the office.

Samantha Peart, ARUP
“The eWater Hygiene system has eliminated the need for toxic chemicals for cleaning while reducing plastic waste from cleaning products – this results in a number of benefits from health and wellbeing, through to environmental, embodied energy and waste impacts.”
— Samantha Peart, ESD Leader for Victoria and South Australia.

The eWater System has allowed Arup to remove chemical cleaning products from its workplace in the most part, and as part of its WELL interiors accreditation is already tracking energy, and this now adds water, waste and cleaning products to this tracking.

“In addition, it’s achieving cost benefit, and has been easy to implement and install” Samantha adds.

Turning a vision into reality

The principles of WELL and wellness carry throughout the space, starting with a 1000m2 elevated garden – the Sky Park - which is the direct entry for staff and visitors. This outdoor space bleeds internally through use of natural materials.

More than 600 plants provide oxygenation and a fully programmable lighting system designed to mimic the body’s natural circadian rhythm, also assists in promoting mental and physical health. A purpose-designed Wellness Centre, adjoining end-of-trip facilities and storage for 80+ bikes, also promote balance and well-being activity.

Its features also include an indoor air quality monitoring of air pollutants; and, monitoring of water system to comply with highest quality standards.
